Heading toward the city...

Although Ray Bradbury's work is often referred to as science fiction, Fahrenheit 451 has plenty to say about the world as it is, and not as it could be. Now that you have finished reading the book, select one of the following themes from the novel and briefly explain what the book teaches about this concept.

conformity vs. individuality

freedom of speech and the consequences of losing it
the importance of remembering and understanding history
machines as helpers or hindrances/enemies to mankind
the individual versus society
the importance of thinking independently

Also please answer the poll about the books in the column at the right. (The deadline to post a reply to this question is midnight, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014)

i chose the importance of understanding history.. I chose this because it is very important to understand what happened in history so you are aware of what is going on, so you will not let history repeat itself.

I chose conformity vs individuality. The book teaches us that conformity leads to being cold and unloving and unlovable. Mildred is a prime example of this.

I choose the importance of thinking independently. There are very many reasons why thinking independently is important. For one, it gives knowledge. It gives people emotions. Thinking independently helps tremendously when it comes to problem solving. If people do not think independently they will be like Mildred and most of the society in Fahrenheit 451. They do not have any emotions, all they do is destroy things, and watch their parlor walls. Think independently for your own good.
