Ann Putnam's statement in Act One of The Crucible
that "...there are wheels within wheels and fires within fires" in
Salem village presents one of the major themes of the play--selfishness/self-directed society. Which character do you feel is
most self-directed and why? How does his/her self-motivation "spin" the
wheels of others? In this blogging, you may comment on the same character as the person before did. (The deadline to post a comment to this blog is midnight, Monday, September 8, 2014.)

I think the most selfish character is Abigail. She makes everyone do what she wants and even intimidates people to lie for her. She is the one who "spins the wheel", because she was having an affair with John Proctor, which makes her jealous of Elizabeth, and causes Betty and Tituba to lie about what happened in the woods, when she drank a charm to kill Elizabeth.
I think Rev. Parris is very selfish to me because in the book it talks about his "villainous path" and how he has many enemies; also why I think he is very selfish is because when his niece is practically on her death bed, he was arguing with others about he wants more money for wood and more money for different things as Betty is dying! {as for so they thought she was}

I think Parris is selfish because while his daughter is laying in the bed sick all he is worried about money.....It probably makes others mad....
