If these whitewashed walls could talk...

In  Chapter 3 in Of Mice and Men, three important events occur as the men sit in the bunkhouse: Candy's dog is shot, Candy, George, Lennie and Candy decide to buy their dream ranch, and Curley attacks Lennie. Select one of these events and write about how Steinbeck created mood/tone of the scene. Explain how this scene made you feel. (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight, Tuesday, April 8, 2014.)

Steinbeck shows a lot of emotion in Candy when his dog is about to get shot. When they were talking about how old and useless the dog was, Candy said how useful the dog was in its younger days. Candy has had the dog for many years and just does not want put him down. After the dog gets shot Candy does not move or say anything. I am sure he is really upset on the inside because the just rolls over in his bed and faces the wall. It was a sad scene because Candy seemed so attached to the dog.

In the scene where George, Lennie, and Candy talk about buying their dream house there is hope and happiness. Steinbeck shows hope when they say how Candy has some money and George and Lennie can work another year to get enough then they could leave this bunk house and not buck barley their whole lives. He shows happiness in the good ways they talk about living there. Lennie gets a loud tone and excitement saying how he can tend to the rabbits. Candy also gets excited by saying even though he's old he can still do somethings to help so he can live there too.

In the fight between Lennie and Curley, Steinbeck shows the characters personalities. It showed that Lennie was scared and did not want to hurt Curley. It showed that Curley was a mean guy and he had it coming to him. This scene made me feel bad for Lennie and made me kind of happy that Curley finally got what he deserved.

In the scene where Curley attacks Lennie it reveals there difference of personalities . Lennie is a kind natured and kind hearted person who was only smiling at the thought of being on his dream ranch. Curley is a stubborn mean man who was looking for a fight . Lennie was only trying to protect hisself from Curleys wrath by grabbing his hand. This Scene is very suspenseful and the mood is frightening in a way.

Steinbeck show much suspence when writing the scene where Carlson shoots Candy's dog. That whole scene makes the reader wait and wait for something to happen. They know it is coming, but they do not know when it will.
