Pointing the finger...

Based upon your reading of Act One, discuss how the Puritans’ attitudes and beliefs may have caused or increased the outbreak of the witchcraft hysteria. Do people today still react to hysteria? What is one thing of recent times were hysteria has caused people to react in rash or illogical ways? (This post closes at midnight on March 6, 2014.)

The Puritans are so religious, and all of a sudden girls are getting sick after dancing in the forest and conjuring spirits. Immediately people assume it is related to evil. If the people accused admit to being a witch they will not be killed, so people start pointing fingers at anyone and everyone. The accused admit to being a witch to save their lives whether guilty or not. Yes, hysteria still goes on today; one example is the red scare. Everyone was scared of communist coming in the United States and taking over. McCarthy an attorney started to point the finger at high ranked military people. Also neighbors and everyday people turned each other in saying they were communist just because they did not like their neighbor or who ever they turned in. This is just like everybody pointing the finger in The Crucible.

I think they outbreak was ridiculous. i think the girls were just being young and reckless. they know that this is not allowed or expected of them so they wanted to do it. Which is common for teenagers to do. Everyone freaked out and started pointed fingers at everyone. This doesnt happen anymore because i feel everyone knows just how ridiculous this sounds.

Everything the Puritans do revolves around God. In the book, one of the girls get sick and they think it was because she was dancing in the woods with her friends. They believe it was from a witch. I do not think people these days still react to this as serious as they did back then. Most people are worried about other things.
