The drums rattle like bones...

I think he made the right choice to just confess and get hanged. If he had denied it, he would give his family a bad name for the future. John says, "I have given my soul; leave me my name". He means to not give his family a bad name.

I think John Proctor made the right choice to tell the truth so that his kids, grandkids, and everyone else won't think he was a bad man because there is good in him too. He doesn't want that to happen and also he knows that God already knows what he did wrong that he doesn't need everyone to know it as well and remeber him as a bad person that is why he says "God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are!"

I believe that John Proctor made the right decision at the end. He made the right decision for himself, his wife, and his kids. He wanted his family and the community to remember him not just by the bad, but also by all the good he has done in his life. The piece of paper would just remind people the bad about him. "You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs."
