Wheels Within Wheels
Early in the play Ann Putnam makes the statement "...there are wheels within wheels and fires within fires" in
Salem village. This presents one of the major themes of the
play--selfishness/self-directed society. Which character do you feel is
most self-directed and why? How does his/her self-motivation "spin" the
wheels of others? (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight, Wednesday, March 19, 2014.)

I think the most self-centered character is Abigail. She is trying so hard to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor that she doesn't care what she has to do to make it happen.
I think Abigail Williams is the most selfish character from The Crucible. She is pointing the finger at anyone and everyone. She stabbed herself to set up Elizabeth. Abby is doing what she can to get rid of Elizabeth and take Elizabeth's place. Abigail "spins" the wheels of others by basically having all the power. She just has to say so and so is a witch and they will be arrested; she has everyone afraid of her.
I think Abigail is the most selfish character in the play. She blames everyone else for everything that happens. Everyone is scared of her because she is accusing people for committing witchcraft. She wants to be with John Proctor so she is trying to kill Elizabeth to take her place in his life.
I believe Abigail Williams is the most selfish and self centered character in The Crucible. She is so worried about making sure Elizabeth is gone so she can have her spot in being John's significant other. She stabbed herself just so it would look like Elizabeth used the poppet, the poppet Mary Warren made for her, to hurt her. Abby is the one who brought Elizabeth's name up in court for witchcraft. She is crazy!
