What's a Puritan to do?
At the end of Act Two, both John Proctor and Mary Warren face crucibles: Mary must decide to tell the truth or not about Abigail and what the girls did in the forest while John must decide to go to the court and tell that he had an affair with Abigail. Who should confess? Does this person have the ability to do this? What do you predict will happen if this person goes to the court with the truth? Why do you think this?(The deadline to post a response to this blog is midnight Sunday, September 23, 2012)
I believe that Mary should be the one to confess, but in all reality she is mentally and emotionally unable to. She is just so child-like. If she confessed to the court, she would end up condemning herself along with Abigail and I think that she realizes this. Both Mary and John are stuck with the decision to either let Elizabeth be charged, or to come forward to save her and condemn themselves. It will be interesting to see who makes what decision because the people in this town never seem to think about others and only themselves.
I think John Proctor should tell the truth. He has the ability to do it. He is way stronger emotionally than Mary. If he does, I think he will be hanged, but Abigail would, also. I hate Abigail so much. Adultery is against the ten commandments and is punishable be hanging.
I feel that both of them should confess. They both have something to contribute to the proving of Elizabeth's innocence, and one story fits right in with the other. I feel that if they confess, John will be hanged because, in their theocracy, Adultery is against the law and is punishable by that.
I think that John should confess. Mary isn't emotionally and mentally strong enough to do it. If John really loves Elizabeth, he'll confess even though he will hang for adultery.
I think John Proctor should confess that he had an affair because he is mentally stable to do so. Mary has the mind of a little girl, so she would not know what to do. I think if John confesses he will get hanged because he committed adultery, which is against the ten commandments.
I think that John Proctor should definitely be the one to confess. He is a very strong and independent man, and he has to ability to confess. On the other hand, Mary Warren is a very immature girl and does not have the ability to confess and is very afraid of Abigail. If John goes to court confessing that he has committed adultery, he will be tried and most likely hanged. I really hope that he can talk his way out of it though.
Although Mary Warren seems emotionally unable to confess, I believe she should be the one. John Proctor did have an affair, but that is more of a personal matter that should be discussed between Elizabeth and Abigail. On the other hand, if Mary Warren confesses, Abigail will be likely jailed or executed (depending on how the court sees fit) and Mary will no longer be in danger as she so fears. I believe her fear of Abigail is wrongly predetermined and will not have the affect on her that she believes.
AR First block- I belive that both of them should confess. The reason I think this is because of the fact that both of their confessions can bring out Abigail's underlying plan and reasoning for doing all of this. I think everyone should know what a selfish and horrible person she really is underneath her false, kind exterior. Mary Warren doesn't seem emotionally capable of even confessing because of her child-like manner, but I think it is necessary she does and I think she will because John Proctor will make her. If John Proctor confesses, then a lot of things can go wrong. I think he and Abigail will both be jailed for it, but I also think that it is worth it. Many innocent people are dying, so it will stop the madness that she has created with her false accusations. If Mary confesses, I think Abigail will tear her apart with words and that the court will refuse to believe Mary anyway, so I think it's useless, but also necessary to get the truth out. Therefore, John Proctor and Mary Warren should both confess.
I believe that Mary Warren should confess. She knows what they are doing is wrong but she is just a coward. John Proctor confessing would not help nearly as much as it would if she did. Although I know she should, Mary does not seem to be able to confess. She is too frightened. If she did confess then all the people who are being unlawfully accused would be free. I think this because if everyone knows it was the girls who were doing the witchcraft, everyone who they framed would obviously be innocent.
I believe john and mary should confess. I believe they are both capable. John should confess about how he committed adultery with abigail. They will both be hung. Mary should confess about what abigail has been doing. Abigail will be sent to court. In my opinion that is what needs to be done.
They are each partly to blame for Abigail's actions, and their individual testimonies by themselves would probably not be enough to sway the court. Rightfully, they should both testify. However, if the task must be left to only one of the pair, Mary deserves the punishment that will follow the confession more than John Proctor does. After all, while John was aware of Abigail's lunacy and motives, unlike Mary, he did not actually take part in the crimes committed by Abigail. Unfortunately, Mary is the weaker-willed of the pair, and even with John Proctor's testimony to bolster her own, she is unlikely to risk Abigail's wrath. Judging by Abigail's threats and the close-minded behavior of the members of the court, Mary's testimony alone woul be discounted, and Abigail would be given plenty of opportunity to carry out her threats towards Mary.
I think John should confess because he did something wrong- had an affair with Abigail- and is far stronger than Mary. She is a shy, weepy child that should not be dragged into the nonsense. Not only this, but he would also save the life of his innocent, pure wife. Although I think it would be hard for John to confess, I believe he has the power to do so because he is in control of his actions. I sense a great hint of reluctance but also sense that he knows that he must do this. If John went to court and confessed, he would most likely be hanged due to the fact that the law of the town mirrors that of God's word, and adultery is breaking one of the Ten Comandments.
I believe that John should confess for his actions. He is much more fit for confession. He is strong and it is to help save his wife who has done nothing. Mary is fragile in a sense and wouldn't be able to handle confessing. She is far too afraid of Abigail and what she could possible do to her. Josh committing adultery could possibly have him hanged, but the true side of Abigail and her motives of wanting to convict Elizabeth need to be brought out and recognized.

However, I don't believe she will be able to do this. She is too unstable and easily swayed by others to be able to take a stand and do the right thing. If she does manage to confess I believe that the court will condemn Abigail and hang her for her crimes because of the scandal she caused. C.A. 1st Block
