American Dream Begins...

Which of the aspects of the American Dream (abundant land, veritable wealth, religious fortitude, open hospitality, laborious work ethic, etc. ), established by the early American writers and explorers, do you feel was best conveyed in the writings of Columbus, Smith, and Bradford? Give specifics from the selections to support your claim.(The deadline to post a response to this blog question is midnight Wednesday, August 27, 2014.)

I think the best conveyed aspect is abundant land. All three writers talked about the lands. Columbus refered to it as an "spectacle of great beauty", with lofty and verdant trees. Smith said the lands were abundant, with lots of animals that can be hunted and eaten. Bradford may not have transmited a good image at first, but he said they were plenty, even though when he got there, they happened to be empty because of the winter. Definitely, the most refered aspect about the new place, and the American Dream, we're the big and abundant lands.

I think the abundant land was the best established aspect because in Columbus's letter to the queen and king, he talked about how fertile the ground was and how many trees there were. In Smith's writings, he talked about how they could grow many different kinds of crops. While Bradford never talked about the land being plentiful (because it was winter and bare), we know the land had to have been good because when he wrote about the first Thanksgiving, they ate many different foods, including corn and they had enough to feed all pilgrims and Indians for 3 days.

I think the abundant land was conveyed the best because in all 3 stories, columbus, smith, and Bradford talk about how the land is beautiful and plentiful.
