Wheels Within Wheels

Ann Putnam's statement in Act One of The Crucible that "...there are wheels within wheels and fires within fires" in Salem village presents one of the major themes of the play--selfishness/self-directed society. Which character do you feel is most self-directed and why? How does his/her self-motivation "spin" the wheels of others? (The deadline to post a response to this question is midnight, Thursday, March 1, 2012.)

I believe Abigail Williams is the most selfish . Because she accuses john proctors wife of being a witch because she wants to be with john and have him all too herself

Abigail Williams is the most self-directed character. Abigail had an affair with John Proctor. Goody Proctor, John Proctor's wife, found out about it and fired Abigail from their house. So then Abigail went to Titnba and they danced in the woods, along with one or two more people. Then people started finding out about them dancing in the woods. She lied to save herself by saying it was just sport. Later on people started accusing people of being witches. Some people agreed that they were and they were hanged but they really were not witches, the were innocent. Other people that were accused said that they were not witches and got put in jail. The whole town turned into a witch hunt and everything was in chaos. A lot of people died because of this even though they were innocent.

I think Abigail is the most selfish character because she is willing to ruin people's lives just to cover up hers. John Proctor got caught having an affair with Abigail by his wife Elizabeth. Abigail wants to have John to herself so bad that she accuses Elizabeth of being a witch along with many other people.
