There is more to this story than plot...
Poe uses much symbolism and irony in "The Cask of Amontillado." Select some symbol or element of irony in the story that drew your interest or helped you to understand the story more. Tell us about and explain what it revealed and why you were drawn to it. (The deadline to post a response to this blog is midnight, Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011.)
The symbolism that drew my interest is that death and a jester is symbolized. It helped me understand and forshadow who would have revenge. The symbolism just sparked my imagination as the story drew on. It revealed who the protagonist and antagonist where in the story.
The symbolism that attracts by attention most would have to be the wine used and defined in this story. The reason why it captures my attention so significantly is because Montressor uses it as a bait and switch attack on Fortunato. Little does Fortunato know that, that is the fate of him to live or die. Another reason for the wine is to symbolize the wealth and success of him and Fortunato. Montressor sees him above everyone else and wants Fortunato to see this.
