"Will Somebody LISTEN to me?"

At the end of Act One, Walter and Mama present their differing views on life and what is important in life. What are these views and with whose view do you most connect/understand/empathize? Why? (The deadline to post a response to this blog question is midnight Friday, April 29, 2011.)

Walter Younger and Mama differ in their opinions of the importance of money in life. Walter believes that money makes happiness and wants to invest in the liquor store. On the other hand, Mama believes that love is the strength of a family and strongly disagrees that Walter should be involved in selling alcohol. I believe that Mama is correct in this argument because people who are wealthy do not always find happiness. Money does make situations more comfortable, but it does not solve every problem.

Walter believes that money is the secret to happiness and a good life. This is understandable when considering that he is a limosine and every day sees the effects of monetary success. However, he is not greedy, rather he wants this success so he can better provide for his family. In contrast, Mama firmly insists that freedom is the most important thing in life. She spent her entire life working trwards an end of segregation, and now that they have it, she just wants to excercise her freedom. Personally, I think that they both are correct. Freedom is important to live, but money is necessary to live well. I must agree, though, that money does not garruntee happiness, so i suppose that freedom is the more important of the two, but in their situation, not by much(I am a bad American for being so reluctant in this decision).
