Gatsby's Neighbors
Based on the first two chapters of the book, what are your initial thoughts on one of the following characters: Nick, Tom, Daisy, Jordan, Myrtle? Why? (This post closes at midnight on Sunday, December 6, 2009.)
Based on the first two chapters of this book, my intial thoughts of Tom are big and cruel. Since he is told be unfaithful, abusive, and racist, I believe that he is an all around insensitive person. Not only was Tom abusive twords his wife, but also his mistress. I believe he is selfish and cares for no one but himself. No one wants to get on his bad side, and I would not want to be around him.
I think Daisy is a kind-hearted person deep down. Even though she acts dumb in front of Tom, she is actually quite bright. She is scared of Tom because of how he abuses her. She feels worthless because he cheats on her, and she has a daughter to take care of on her own.
I believe Daisy is a kind and caring woman though a bit ditzy. Unfortunately, she is one of many women who has made a poor choice in marriage. I can not say wether she loves her daughter or not though she definitely wants the best for her. I really hope that Daisy will divorce Tom and seek her true love Gatsby. Only the rest of the book will tell.
