F. Scott Fitzgerald is known for having said,"Rich people aren't like you and me." Chapter One of The Great Gatsby focuses a great deal on the homes and the actions in the homes of the rich. Through the setting, it is revealed that money influences people. It decides who you marry, what you wear, what you do, and how you act. The richest of people usually have a very old styled house because their money has been passed down through generations. People of new money, have homes that are factual imitations. While both types of people have money, the owners of old money have more power than people of new money will ever know.
Money is the separation etween 'breeds' of people. Once a person becomes a member of the 'upper' breed, they are expected, and therefore forced, to act and live in a different way. Only people with 'old' money have huge, old mansions covered with ivy. Anybody with new money can of course build an old styled house, but they will still never quite understand the power that old money gives.
People with old money live very different lives from the ones of people with new money. People with old money have had such money in their family for a very long time. It has been passed down from generations. They live in houses that show class and age because they do not feel the need to flaunt their money because everyone knows they are wealthy. People of new money feel the need to build huge fancy houses that are modern and are clearly the result of new money. People of old money have a power that people of new money will never experience.
The setting of this book reveals that money influences who people are in their lives. People who are rich from old money have colonial-styled mansions. They dress in white and pastels, and they do not flaunt their money because they feel like they can be who they want to be. People who are rich from new money, however, flaunt their money. Their houses are modern and decorated elaborately. They also dress to empress other people and to flaunt their money. This setting reveals that rich peoples' lives are greatly influenced by how much money and power they have.
In the Great Gatsby the setting reveals much about the lives of the rich people. The city is split into rich money and old money. This shows how their is a major difference on how they got their money, and the people with old money are higher up in the social class. People with old money are conservative and do not try to boast about their wealth. On the other hand, people that have just been introduced to wealth become consumed by it and try to show off. This setting shows the difference between old and new money, and how it effects they rich people.
